Dental Crowns at Fibonacci Dental Studio, Rapid City
When a tooth is cracked, severely decayed, or weakened, it needs more than a simple filling. A dental crown is a custom-fitted cap that covers the entire visible part of a tooth, restoring its original shape, size, and strength. It acts as a protective shield, allowing you to chew and speak comfortably again. For over a decade, Dr. Laura Davies has been providing durable, high-quality crown treatments tailored to each patient's unique needs.
Whether you need to protect a tooth after a root canal or restore one that is significantly damaged, a dental crown offers a reliable, long-term solution.
What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a custom restoration designed to encase a tooth completely. Unlike a filling, which only patches a portion of the tooth, a crown provides full coverage, reinforcing the tooth's structure and protecting it from further damage.
Crowns may be employed for various purposes, including:
- Protection of a tooth that has been compromised by extensive decay or large fillings.
- Repair fractured or worn-down tooth structure
- Stabilization and protection of a tooth after root canal therapy.
- Protection of a Dental Implant
- An anchor for a dental bridge
- Aesthetic restoration of a tooth that is badly discolored or irregularly shaped.
At Fibonacci Dental Studio, we use advanced digital technology to create crowns that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Benefits of Choosing Dental Crowns
Dental crowns offer many advantages to patients seeking to protect and restore their teeth:
- Structural Reinforcement: Crowns restore the integrity of damaged teeth, allowing them to withstand the forces of chewing without risk of further fracture.
- Targeted Protection: A crown seals the tooth, shielding it from bacteria and preventing decay in a vulnerable tooth.
- Restored Function: A well-fitted crown allows you to bite and chew with confidence, restoring the natural function of your bite.
- Seamless Appearance: Custom-made crowns are designed to match the color and shape of your surrounding teeth, blending naturally into your smile.
These benefits make crowns an essential treatment for preserving natural teeth and maintaining long-term oral health.
Dental Crown Materials
At Fibonacci Dental Studio, you have several options regarding the material for your crown. Each other is chosen according to the specific needs of the tooth in the location of the mouth, as well as the wishes of the patient:
- Porcelain or Ceramic: These materials offer the most natural appearance and are an excellent choice for front teeth, where aesthetics are a primary concern.
- Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM): This type of crown combines the strength of a metal base with the natural look of a porcelain exterior, making it a durable option for many areas of the mouth.
- Metal Alloys: Gold or other metal alloys are renowned for their exceptional durability and can withstand heavy chewing forces, making them ideal for molars located at the back of the mouth.
- Zirconia: A very strong, tooth-colored ceramic that resists chipping and cracking, suitable for both front and back teeth.
Dr. Davies will discuss these options with you to determine the best material for your specific clinical needs and desired outcome.
The Dental Crown Procedure
The general crown-making procedure at Fibonacci Dental Studio involves:
- Initial Consultation: Dr. Davies will examine the tooth using digital X-rays to confirm that a crown is the best treatment option.
- Tooth Preparation: The tooth is gently reshaped to create space for the crown. If necessary, a filling material is used to build up the tooth's core, providing a stable foundation.
- Digital Impressions: We use a CEREC Omnicam scanner to capture a highly accurate 3D model of your tooth. This digital process is fast, comfortable, and eliminates the need for messy impression putty.
- Crown Fabrication: With our in-office milling technology, we can often design, create, and place your permanent crown in a single visit. In some instances, the digital impression is sent to a specialized lab.
- Temporary Crown: If your crown is made at a lab, a temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth between appointments.
- Final Placement: Dr. Davies will place the final crown, checking the fit and your bite to ensure perfect alignment and comfort before permanently bonding it in place.
Same-Day Crowns with CEREC®
Our investment in CEREC® technology allows us to offer same-day crowns to many of our patients. This means no temporary crown and no need for a second appointment, saving you time and making the process more convenient.
